My dad’s handwriting was very artistic and I often use to
imitate his handwriting to improve mine. When we started Prep, we were first
given, “Cursive Writing Book” to practice handwriting both in capital and small
letters. We started with individual alphabets progressing onto full sentence. I
was a little obsessed with good handwriting and since I was a slow writer, I
would get scolded both at home and at school. But one day I realised that my
good handwriting started earning extra marks in few subjects in class and that
inspired me to maintain it throughout my student life.
My son, who started his school in India and later came to
Australia and joined grade 4, also learned writing with Cursive Writing Book.
During those days in India, the schools use to give ‘Handwriting’ as homework
for summer and winter vacations. I still remember once when my son’s school
asked them to finish fifteen pages of handwriting in fifteen days of their
vacation. My son was writing one page every day and on the 12th day
I suddenly found that his handwriting was very bad and untidy. I destroyed his
entire 12 days of effort and made him finish the entire fifteen pages of
handwriting in just three days. Alas! I never imagined that there will be no
writing anymore; no good handwriting! Everything will be typed in a
computer! No one will be there to
appreciate your good handwriting skills anymore, in today’s day and age!
Today I don’t know how my son’s handwriting is. I won’t be
able to even recognise my son’s handwriting on a piece of paper! I find him
always typing away in his laptop or smart phone, syncing his lists, thoughts,
ideas, calendar events, invitations, etc. while I still write my shopping list
with a pen and a piece of paper.
